"Watch out: Being too comfortable can kill you! But first it will seduce you into living a life void of uncertainty and risk. Your personal narrative gets briefer; the outline of your life gets smaller, until one day you understand that this comfortable life you've created is really just a cage.
"Take me. For a long time I thought I was brave, that I could step up and punch through any challenge that blocked my path. Hah! It took an adventure trip to the slot canyons of Southern Utah to show me that fear was really running the show. From that day forward I committed to escaping the trap my comfortable life had become.
"Thus began a 15-year journey to understand the nature of fear, and to figure out how to conquer it. Along the way I had many failures, some triumphs, but pushing myself to the literal edge has made my life richer, my outlook more expansive, and my stories a lot more interesting! Let me share these hard won lessons with you."
Before becoming a full-time writer and speaker, Janice was CEO of three national non-profit organizations, and her background is as diverse as the adventures she takes. Her first job was working in criminal court where she learned everything she needed to about what people are capable of at their worst. She's also a professional photographer, having first made her splash chronicling outdoor adventures, then moving her focus to animals. As a writer, she's written two best-selling books: Only Pack What You Can Carry (National Geographic) is an inspirational memoir about the gifts of solo travel; and A Voice out of Nowhere is the true story of a young man with no history of violence who committed mass murder while under the influence of mental illness. Janice has a Master's Degree in Leadership, with a focus on developing personal and professional courage. Born in British Columbia, she is also an accomplished equestrienne and has traveled the world on horseback. Janice writes regularly for Life Reimagined and is currently at work on a new book about becoming brave.
